How to Use:

These two tools identify your strongest hand options at the start of a Mah Jongg game. Enter your opening 13 tiles — either randomly drawn or entered manually — and the tool calculates which hands from the 2026 NMJL card give you the best chance of winning.

The tool checks your tiles against all 1,077 combinations of the 2026 NMJL hands and ranks the top three. Probabilities are based on your opening hand and the remaining tiles in the deck; they will naturally shift as the game progresses.

Choosing a Version

  • Mah Jongg Random Hand — the tool draws 13 tiles for you at random. Use this to explore probabilities or practice reading opening hands.
  • Mah Jongg Custom Hand — you enter your own 13 tiles manually. Use this during an actual game to evaluate your dealt hand.

Step 1 — Enter Your 13 Tiles

Random Hand: Click Draw 13 Tiles. The tool randomly selects 13 tiles from a full 152-tile deck, using the same composition as a real Mah Jongg set. Your tiles are displayed on screen.

Custom Hand: Tiles are organized into six groups: Jokers & FlowersBamCrackDotWinds, and Dragons. For each tile you hold, press the + button next to that tile. Press it again for duplicates. A running total tracks your selection and turns green when you reach exactly 13.

A few things to know about the Custom Hand tile entry:

  • You cannot select more copies of a tile than exist in a real deck (for example, no more than 4 of any suited tile or 8 Jokers)
  • The + button grays out automatically when you reach the limit for that tile, or when your total reaches 13
  • Made a mistake? Press  to remove a tile, or click Clear All to start over

Step 2 — Calculate Probabilities

Click the Calculate Probabilities button. (In the Custom Hand version, this button becomes active only once you have exactly 13 tiles selected.)

The tool evaluates all 1,077 official hand combinations from the 2026 NMJL card and calculates the exact probability of completing each one. A progress indicator appears while the calculation runs; it typically completes in less than a minute.

Step 3 — Review Your Top Hand Choices

Your top three hand choices are displayed in ranked order. Each result shows:

  • Rank — the relative ranking by probability, based on your opening hand
  • Category — the section of the card the hand belongs to (for example, 2468 or Consecutive Runs)
  • Rule(s) — any special condition for that hand (for example, “Any 2 Suits”)
  • Tile pattern — a visual display of the tiles required to complete the hand
  • Suggested Charleston pass — shown for your Rank 1 choice only, the three tiles from your opening hand that are least useful to that hand and are recommended to pass in the first Charleston
